If a student is experiencing challenges in their education due to Long COVID, it is important to provide them with the necessary support to ensure equal access to learning opportunities. Long COVID can be considered a disability under federal laws such as the ADA, Section 504, and Section 1557, providing protection against discrimination. Schools are required by law to provide reasonable accommodations and modifications to students who have disabilities impacting their learning.

An accommodation is a change that removes a barrier to learning or completing assignments. Accommodations don’t change what kids learn, just how they learn it.

effective accommodations for students with Long COVID.

A 504 Plan is for students with disabilities who do not require special education services, while an IEP (Individualized Education Plan) provides specialized instruction and support to help students access and progress in the curriculum.
Parents can refer their child for a 504 evaluation and/or an IEP evaluation. While verbal requests are accepted, it is highly recommended to put your request in writing and submit it to the district’s 504 coordinator or the Special Education Coordinator, along with the school principal. The district will review the referral and provide a letter of consent to proceed with evaluating your child.
It’s important to note that children do not necessarily need a full evaluation or medical diagnosis to qualify for a 504 plan. However, having a medical diagnosis can streamline the process. A 504 evaluation typically involves a review of medical history, schoolwork samples, direct observation of the student, input from teachers and school staff, parent interviews, and other assessments as part of the Evaluation Process.
On the other hand, a Special Education evaluation for an IEP does involve standardized and formal assessments and evaluations within specific timelines as mandated by state and federal laws. A child can have a 504 plan in place while undergoing the Evaluation Process for an IEP.

Homebound services assist students medically unable to attend school.
Many kids with Long COVID utilize Homebound Accommodations while attending public school. This program ensures that students can stay on track with their studies even when they are unable to be present in the classroom. Managed by the student’s school district, the homebound program offers a certified teacher to assist the student in their home if they meet the program’s requirements.
Students in both regular and special education can access this service if they are unable to attend school for four or more weeks during the school year due to illness. To join the program, the student’s physician must fill out a form confirming the medical condition.

For some families, virtual schooling or homeschooling could be a more suitable option for their child dealing with Long COVID.
Virtual school offers online instruction, enabling learning from any internet-connected location. It offers flexibility in scheduling and pacing, making it an ideal option for students who need to learn from home due to health conditions or other reasons.
Homeschooling allows for a highly personalized learning experience tailored to the child’s unique needs, interests, and pace. Guidelines and regulations governing homeschooling vary significantly from state to state.
With proper guidance and customized support like flexible schedules, extra time for tasks, and assistive technology, educators can create a nurturing environment for students with Long COVID. Collaborating closely, parents, teachers, and healthcare
professionals can provide the necessary resources for these children to succeed academically and socially. Such strategies empower students to navigate Long COVID challenges and reach their full potential.
